Breaking the mold… Stanford and GLIDE!

Last week I had the pleasure of attending the 40th Anniversary of Stanford’s Public Management Program (PMP). It was a heart-warming and inspirational day. As a graduate of Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, I was proud to represent both GLIDE and Stanford Business School at the event and even more proud to see the connections between GLIDE and Stanford in our intentions and our spirit.
Forty years ago, the business school broke the mold and began a Public Management Program to respond to the inability of leaders in the business, not-for-profit, and government sectors to work together and communicate effectively to solve problems. What an idea for one of the top business schools in the country– forty years ago! We have grown to expect this leadership across the sectors, thanks to this bold step by the Stanford Business School took in 1970. The PMP has evolved to educate business students on leadership across sectors and, like me, many graduates work and lead within the non-profit sector.
The mission of the PMP is to empower students to Change Lives, Change Organizations, and Change the World. GLIDE uses very different words to define our mission and values, yet we communicate many of the same messages. We transform lives, and transform our organization (and others) to transform the world. GLIDE is at its most powerful when we work together with business and government to find solutions to the most pressing issues in our community including hunger, homelessness, and the struggles of the working poor. We have brokered that role over the last 50 years and will continue to keep the issues of the poor at the forefront of the minds of business and government leaders in San Francisco. It is our community’s imperative and one that makes us all stronger!
