GLIDE Emerging Leader: Jake Friedler

Get to know Jake Friedler in today’s installment of our GLIDE Emerging Leaders Intern profile series!

School & Major: Stanford University, Symbolic Systems
What brought you to GLIDE? I began working with the unhoused community of Palo Alto during my first year at Stanford and was inspired to learn more about how a major institution like GLIDE addressed the issue on a much larger scale.
What do you hope to contribute/learn during your time at GLIDE? There is so much history and knowledge invested in GLIDE, and I hope to absorb as much of it as possible during my time as an intern, but my main goal is to interact as much as possible with the many different groups of people involved in its services.
Which of GLIDE’s Core Values resonates with you most and why? It’s a tie between “Celebration” and being “For The People.” I think Reverend Cecil’s revolutionary decision to make GLIDE a church that first and foremost addressed the needs of its community is what made the place what it is today, but GLIDE could be quite mundane without the jovial atmosphere of constantly celebrating life, love, and the successes of the people it serves.
I wish… I could see and experience the Tenderloin in its historical heyday.
I hope… to find a place as a loving and giving member of the greater SF Bay Area community as a result of my time as GLIDE.
I am grateful… for the many individuals who have helped the interns understand what GLIDE truly means through their shining examples and offered us their support, advice, and mentorship.
