Love Has Kept Us Together: Glide Memorial Church Plans a Month of In-Person and Virtual Pride Festivities

June 7, 2022

SAN FRANCISCOGlide Memorial Church and the Glide Pride Team are thrilled to participate in the return to in-person Pride Month in San Francisco. We are announcing a return to in-person Pride-themed events throughout the month of June, while also offering virtual opportunities to celebrate. The month-long happenings include participation in San Francisco’s first in-person Pride parade since 2019; celebration of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt’s 35th Anniversary; the lighting of the Church belfry in pink lights; a virtual, talk-show style conversationon Drag & Spirituality with trans genderqueer spiritual drag artist and digital chaplain, Bonnie Violet; and special LGBTQ+-focused Sunday Celebrations online.

Love Has Kept Us Together, the theme for GLIDE Memorial Church’s 2022 Pride month, will celebrate the power of love and community as guiding lights in the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic. From June 1-30 the GLIDE Memorial Church will display the Pride Beacon of Light in the church’s bell tower, radiating pink every evening and serving as a symbol of radical inclusion for all of San Francisco.  Glide Memorial Church has helped drive progress for the LGBTQ+ community for decades and its participation in San Francisco’s Pride Parade dates back to the parade’s beginning in 1970.

“Glide Memorial Church is dedicated to unconditional love, radically inclusive faith and social justice, and Pride is going to be an exciting month,” said Minister of Celebration Marvin K White. “This is the first time in three years that there’s going to be a parade again – Our Pride team is taking the glitter off the shelf. This year, we will return to our in-person marching without our beloved co-founder, Janice Mirikitani, but we carry her spirit and fierce advocacy with us! Her legacy lives on in the paths she helped pave – alongside Rev. Cecil Williams – for LGBTQ+ social and sexual  justice. As we return to in-person Pride for 2022, let us remember that LGBTQ+ can lead a liberation movement, and can bring us out of these years of despair into light and joy and love. Let’s remember that celebration is a tool of resistance.”
