Gong Hay Fat Choy: Happy Lunar New Year!

by Kristen Growney Yamamoto, co-Executive Director
Gong Hay Fat Choy—Happy Lunar New Year!  I love to reflect in the New Year about what I accomplished (or not!) over the prior year, and to re-set priorities and goals for the future.

2011 was a year of transitions and opportunities here at GLIDE.  We overcame many obstacles related to funding and the difficult decisions to end programming in order to keep our organization healthy and vital.  Those transitions were not easy, but we can confidently say GLIDE is stronger and healthier having made tough decisions and implemented them.  Because of our changes, we also opened ourselves to new opportunities and ideas.  For example, the programs in our Community Building Division partnered with the Stanford d.School (design school) to look at creative ways to improve our ‘participant experience’ here at GLIDE. The collaborative project resulted in numerous new ideas to implement as well as introduced us new ways of creative thinking and experimenting to move ideas forward. In another example, our HIV Services were faced with drastic cuts in the City’s funding. Rather than shut its doors, our program rallied support, reorganized services and added a new syringe-access program and began venue-based testing in the neighborhood to complement our existing work.  All around—it was energizing and exciting.
As we look forward, you have our commitment that GLIDE will remain vital and vibrant. We are a critical element of the fabric of our City and the work we do is crucial to our community and our participants.  In 2012, look for the launch of our new Wellness Center on the 5th Floor, increased integration of our services focusing on nutrition  in 2012—you can see it in action in our Meals program, our Family, Youth and Childcare programs, and our Health Clinic.
As we embark into the new year, it is important to acknowledge the talented, dedicated, and compassionate staff here at GLIDE who make it all happen, each and every day. They do it for the love of our community and the importance of our mission.  Thank you, and Happy New Year!
