I am thankful for new traditions.

“Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s house we go…”  These song lyrics always remind me of Thanksgiving as our family would load up in our station-wagon to drive across the state of Pennsylvania to visit my grandparents for the holiday.  I remember lots of food and eating but mostly remember the good times with my cousins and grandfather outside before and after the meal.  We would help to rake the yard and make giant piles of leaves for jumping and obstacle courses.  We practiced making giant pyramids and see if we could beat last year’s record.
When I moved to California in 1993, I moved 3000 miles away from those Thanksgiving celebrations and had to begin my own.  My roommates and I hosted an ‘orphan Thanksgiving’ for friends and other east-coast transplants that didn’t have parents or relatives nearby.  Our first orphan-Thanksgiving had over 20 attendees!  As we continued the tradition, the crowd of friends changed and others hosted, but the spirit of open to everyone and we all chip in to help make it a success remained.  I now have children of my own and we host, but still host friends (aka ‘orphans’) along with us every year.   I am thankful for new traditions and opening our home to share with family and friends.
