"Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed."
by Kim Armbruster, Walk-In Center Manager
In honor of Cesar Chavez Day, I’d like to share my favorite of his famous quotes:
“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.”
This resonates perfectly and powerfully with my own experience at GLIDE every day. When we truly “show up” and are honestly and simply present to each other, multi-layered and transformational relationships are formed, relationships that have the power to create change in us.
When I’ve been working with a Walk-In Center participant for a while and we’re celebrating accomplishments and real change in her/his life, I’m also thinking, “Wow. This has changed me, too.” All of us are learning together, taking pride in our true selves together, and banishing oppression with unconditional love together.
GLIDE, at its heart, is a spiritual movement that just naturally creates a transformational community. As we help each other to learn and grow, our lives become a peaceful form of social change, improving our relationships with all those around us and helping to renew our families and our communities. This is the kind of fundamental, ongoing social change that Cesar Chavez describes and that our GLIDE community is working to achieve every day, one person at a time—change that has the power to keep growing into the future.
