GLIDE HEALTH SERVICES CELEBRATES COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS DURING THE HEALTH CENTER EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP

Reception and Tour of Glide Health Services and Glide's New Supportive Housing Building Part of Two-Day National Nursing Centers Consortium in San Francisco

WHAT
Glide and National Nursing Centers Consortium’s (NNCC) Health Center Empowerment Workshop participants will celebrate the community partnerships that empower Glide Health Services (GHS) and community health centers across the country during a reception and tour of GHS and Glide’s new building for permanent supportive housing.

Glide Health Services (GHS), a full-service health clinic in partnership with Catholic Healthcare West, Saint Francis Memorial Hospitaland University of California San Francisco, School of Nursing, provides nearly 14,000 health services to about 3,000 people a year who might otherwise go without health care of any kind.

GHS’ nurse-managed health center is on the cutting-edge of technology with its state-of-the-art electronic health records system that allows the poor and marginalized to have access to high-quality health care. Events, such as the Health Center Empowerment Workshop, are particularly important now that Congress passed landmark health care reform over the weekend. Health care reform will extend health coverage to as many as 30 million currently uninsured Americans. Health centers are a big piece of the current administration’s strategy to provide health services to newly insured individuals and their sustainability needs to be protected. Studies have repeatedly shown physician and nurse-led health centers to be a cost effective means of increasing access and reducing health disparities.

ABOUT GLIDE Health Services (GHS)
Glide Health Services (GHS), a full-service health clinic in partnership with Catholic Healthcare West, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and University of California San Francisco, School of Nursing, provides nearly 14,000 health services to almost 3,000 people a year who might otherwise go without health care of any kind. Focusing on the poor and homeless, GHS offers a full range of traditional health care services for youth and adults, as well as mental health, substance abuse recovery programs, integrated behavioral health and non-Western medicine. Specific programs focus on testing and prevention of HIV/AIDS and treatment of diabetes. A recent study of work with diabetics demonstrated better control of the disease amongst Glide’s population than those served by many academic medical centers, all in a population that is predominantly homeless.  In 2007, GHS moved into a completely rebuilt and remodeled clinic on the top floor of Glide’s main building, vastly increasing capacity and the quality of the patient experience. Through a partnership with St. Anthony’s Foundation and the St. Francis Clinic, GHS is expanding into Electronic Health Records (EHR) to switch from a primarily paper system to online record-keeping.

About National Nursing Centers Consortium
Through a National Cooperative Agreement with U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, NNCC is partnering with the University of California at San Francisco and Glide Foundation to host the Health Center Sustainability Workshop taking place in San Francisco, CA on March 25-26th. This event will provide physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, as well as health administrators with critical training from nationally recognized experts, and begin a process of ongoing assistance from NNCC throughout the coming months. The National Nursing Centers Consortium, (NNCC) is a national membership organization representing nurse-managed health centers across the country. The organization’s mission is to advance nurse-led health care through policy, consultation, programs and applied research to reduce health disparities and meet people’s primary care and wellness needs.
