San Francisco, CA - One of Glide’s own YouthBuild members will receive the national YouthBuild USA Graduate Award for Outstanding Career Achievement.  Tiffani Elliott, a 21 year-old college student and apprentice painter who graduated from Glide’s YouthBuild program in 2006, is one of six graduates from around the country being honored at YouthBuild’s 30th Anniversary Celebration in Washington DC on Tuesday, March 17. In addition to the Anniversary Celebration, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has invited Tiffani, the other awardees, Glide’s YouthBuild program manager Garry Grady and Dorothy Stoneman from YouthBuild USA to meet her in her office on Wednesday, March 18th.

“Tiffani is so deserving of this award,” said Garry Grady.  “She’s an inspiration to the students and the staff because of the way she overcomes obstacles, works hard, and keeps a positive attitude throughout.  We are thrilled for her!”

Each year, YouthBuild recognizes a handful of graduates from its programs throughout the United States.  Tiffani overcame many obstacles to graduate from Glide’s YouthBuild program in 2006.  As a San Francisco high school student, Tiffani was struggling academically and losing her motivation to succeed. And when she did feel motivated, hardships at home made it difficult to keep up with her studies.  Tiffani and Glide’s YouthBuild discovered each other, and she joined the program.  YouthBuild’s focus on work training and education amidst an atmosphere of devoted staff and teachers was exactly what Tiffani needed to regain her focus and determination.  Tiffani is now a college student and a union painter and hopes to eventually become a nurse.  She believes that the skills she learned and confidence she gained through YouthBuild will get her there.

“It’s very rare when you find someone who cares with love instead of their paycheck,” explains Tiffani when describing her YouthBuild experience.  “The entire staff of YouthBuild really took time to get to know us and our needs, and make it possible for us to succeed.  It’s a program of love.”

About Glide YouthBuild
The Glide YouthBuild Program is a leadership and training program for 16-24 year-old youth from the Bay Area’s poorest and most violent neighborhoods. The program includes onsite construction skills training, personal development and leadership skills workshops, GED preparation and the ability to earn academic credit towards a high school diploma. It places graduates in apprenticeship opportunities with building trade unions in the fields of carpentry, drywall, ironwork, painting and cement masons.  YouthBuild’s success rate is impressive:  63% of the 2007 Glide YouthBuild participants successfully completed the program and graduated with a high school diploma or GED;
84% of the 2007 graduates are employed in construction or other jobs; and 63% (12 of 19) of the 2007 graduates are in union apprenticeship programs.
