Safeway Shoppers Can Support Special Food Drive on Saturday, November 20 at San Francisco Safeway Stores and also help GLIDE provide 1,000 Turkeys for Families

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 18, 2010)…Responding to overwhelming need and dwindling resources, the GLIDE Young Professionals Group is partnering with Safeway on its special food drive launched earlier this week to help area food banks feed the hungry. In addition to accepting food donations for community residents, the Young Professionals hope to provide 1,000 turkeys to supplement the poultry offering for GLIDE’s Annual Grocery Bag Giveaway.  On Saturday, November 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Young Professionals will be part of a team of volunteers accepting food donations for community residents at 136 Safeway stores in Northern California, Reno and Hawaii to help individuals and families in need this holiday season.

Safeway Club Card customers who spend $20 at participating Safeway stores in San Francisco can purchase one turkey for $7 and donate it to GLIDE (limit two turkeys per customer).  Customers who spend $40 are eligible to purchase two turkeys for $7 a piece. Bags of groceries – priced at $10 and $15 - are now available for donation at all Safeway stores and are specifically designed for supply needs of area food banks.

The GLIDE food drive is a part of Safeway’s Northern California effort to help hungry families this holiday season. Safeway contributes $175 million in food donations to food banks each year across the U.S. and partners with local organizations each holiday season by placing food collection barrels in stores.

Safeway began partnering with various food banks on Monday November 15 to accept food donations for community residents.  The grocery bag offering will be available to all customers through December 11. Safeway launched the grocery bag offering to make a donation easier for shoppers and to ensure food bank recipients receive good quality items.

“Our team strives to incorporate the GLIDE spirit in every project we do," said Mike Kim, the Chair of GLIDE’s Young Professionals Group. “This special food drive is our way of connecting with our community and filling the Holiday needs of those most in need. It's not simply about a food donation. It’s recognizing the need to always give back to our community.”
GLIDE’s Young Professionals team members and volunteers will be outside participating Safeway stores this Saturday, November 20 from 9 am – 4 pm to remind shoppers about the food drive and to collect any turkeys. The following Safeway stores are participating in the campaign:

  • Castro: 2020 Market Street San Francisco
  • Embarcadero: 145 Jackson Street
  • SOMA/South Beach: 298 King Street
  • Richmond District: 735 – 7th Avenue

“This holiday season, we need you. Safeway is providing a wonderful opportunity to help the thousands of people – families and kids – who need us every day,” said Reverend Cecil Williams, GLIDE’s Founder and Minister of Liberation. “Our food lines have grown tremendously over the past two years – more and more people desperately need our help.  This food will feed thousands of people.  We invite everyone to join us in the spirit of healing, giving hope and celebration.”

On December 17 GLIDE will give away 5,000 bags full of groceries to individuals and families this year.  At this time GLIDE does not have the resources to fill and handout the usual 6,000 bags. Each bag contains fresh poultry, potatoes, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, beans, and vegetables.
“We are proud to be partnering with our area food banks and these important volunteer organizations on this community-wide collection effort,” said Karl Schroeder, president of Safeway’s Northern California Division. “We hope customers will help us end hunger by making a small donation.  Every bag, every can and every dollar does count!”
