Annual eBay Auction for Power Lunch with Warren Buffett Gives GLIDE the Resources to Help Those in Great Need

eBay Giving Works Charity Auction Runs From June 2 – 7, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Warren Buffett, legendary investor and philanthropist, will host his one-and-only charity power lunch to benefit one of the country’s most respected and beloved charitable organizations, San Francisco’s GLIDE, now celebrating its 50th year of supporting the City’s neediest residents.  Now in its 14th year, the annual eBay Auction for Power Lunch with Warren Buffet has raised nearly $15 million for GLIDE’s programs, which directly help San Francisco’s neediest residents.  Last year’s winning bid on eBay set a world-record at $3,456,789. Bidding for this year’s auction opens Sunday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. PDT, and will close on Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. PDT.

“As we mark 50 years in San Francisco, GLIDE is incredibly grateful to the long-term support we’ve received from Warren Buffet,” said GLIDE’s Founder and Minister of Liberation Reverend Cecil Williams.  “Thanks to his vision, our ongoing partnership with eBay, and the generosity of the winning bidders, we’ve been able to provide unconditional support to our neediest neighbors and help people regain control of their lives.”

“There's all kinds of people that need that kind of help, and I don't think anybody is better at providing it than GLIDE," said Warren Buffett.

This year, GLIDE celebrates 50 years of helping San Francisco’s neediest residents.  From the corner of Ellis and Taylor, in the heart of San Francisco’s downtrodden Tenderloin neighborhood, Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani launched a movement shaped by unconditional love and radical inclusivity.  Their partnership and dedication – and the partnerships they forged with people like Warren Buffet and others – changed the lives of those around them one by one.  GLIDE became the heart of the city and the life force of a beloved community.

Today, their social movement continues to grow. By helping people overcome hunger, poverty, homelessness, racism and homophobia, GLIDE has transformed San Francisco itself into a place where acceptance, justice and meaningful change are endlessly possible. In addition to serving over 800,000 meals each year, GLIDE also provides supportive housing; a nationally recognized professional nurse-based community health clinic; an educational and productive urban rooftop garden and dozens of service programs designed to help with people’s basic needs.  GLIDE’s programs provide direct and compassionate benefits for thousands each year, regardless of income, gender, religion, political persuasion and any other factor.

Bidding for this year’s eBay auction opens Sunday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. PDT, and will close on Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. PDT. The bidding starts at $25,000 and all bidders will be pre-qualified prior to bidding. eBay, who will host the auction for the tenth year in a row, will augment their support for Glide in 2013 with additional cash donations and an employee volunteer event. To pre-qualify, visit: The winning bidder will have the opportunity to invite up to seven friends to join him or her and Mr. Buffett for lunch at Smith & Wollensky in New York City. Since 2004 Alan Stillman, founder of Smith & Wollensky, has generously donated at least $10,000 to GLIDE for the privilege of hosting the lunch. Smith & Wollensky has been called “the quintessential New York steakhouse” by Gourmet Magazine and “the steakhouse to end all arguments” by The New York Times.
