The ways GLIDE helps the world…
by Kristen Growney Yamamoto, Co-Executive Director
Yesterday, my 5 year-old daughter asked me to come to her class and talk to her and her friends about the ‘ways that GLIDE helps the world.’ I paused and ask her to repeat her request—‘to come and share the ways that GLIDE helps the world.’ I’ve been thinking about those words since:
One, I was struck by the beauty, simplicity, and elegance of her request. The work that GLIDE does is simple, but NOT easy. GLIDE helps our fellow human beings. We do the work in so many ways that the simplicity of our message, intent, and work sometimes gets masked, but it is simple and loving.
Two, I was struck by her child-like, yet spiritual summation of our work here at GLIDE. We help people, thousands of people (nearly one million meals, 15,000 patient visits to our health clinic last year). Our clients, our city, and our world need GLIDE. We are part of the essence of our community and our work is critically important at so many levels. The spirit with which we do it is contagious. It touches all around us.
Three, I was pleased to hear my young child express her interest in and empathy towards the world around her. Our message resonates with everyone, young and old. It makes sense, we serve all ages—from toddlers to seniors. My daughter has had limited exposure to GLIDE, yet has already been influenced.
Please join GLIDE in creating, upholding, and supporting the critical fabric of our world. Sign up for a volunteer shift, come to a celebration, read to the children. Join GLIDE in helping make the world a better place.
