You Are Our FAMILY
We share solidarity, grief and love with the victims, friends and families of the Orlando shootings at the Pulse nightclub. In this PRIDE month, when we will celebrate the love of our LGBTQ family, we know well that the targeting of a gay club was not incidental.
Almost all of us have shared in the fear and outrage of being singled out for violence because we are queer, of color or otherwise different. And so we at GLIDE make sure that the world knows: You cannot single us out, because we stand together. This is what our Founders, Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani, did in helping found the first gay youth organization, Vanguard, whose members led the Compton Cafeteria riots against police harassment in 1966, at 101 Taylor Street right here in the Tenderloin. Putting the power of GLIDE and the church behind those who are all too often targeted for violence and discrimination empowers all of us to resist hatred, to love openly and to be free
There will be time in the coming days to take on the issues that are highlighted by these killings – gun violence and the use of assault weapons, entrenched homophobia, extremism, and community mental health. For now, we focus on those directly affected by this terrible assault and say: We stand with you, and you are our family.
