Sunday, October 8^th, Glide Memorial Church will celebrate Jazz and Justice Sunday with Special Guest John Santos.  Far more than a master percussionist, internationally renowned, multi-Grammy-nominated John Santos is a prolific Afro-Latin bandleader, composer, teacher, writer, producer, and cultural activist. A 2012 San Francisco Latino Heritage Arts Awardee, he’s been at the center of the Bay Area’s music scene for 50 years. He has worked with acknowledged masters including Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Bebo Valdés, Max Roach, Eddie Palmieri, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Omar Sosa. He has produced a steady stream of critically-acclaimed, peer-respected recordings on his Machete Records label since 1984 and has travelled the world as a teacher and lecturer since the mid-eighties. He served on the Smithsonian Institution’s Latin Jazz Advisory Committee and is a Board member of Oaktown Jazz (Oakland, CA), Living Jazz (Oakland, CA), and the Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance (NY). He was a Resident Artistic Director (2013 & 2014) and also a Trustee (2017-2023) of SFJAZZ. He has taught at Jazz Camp West since 1986. November 12th, 2006 was proclaimed John Santos Day in San Francisco by Mayoral proclamation. The documentary film Santos: Skin to Skin, about his life and career premiered in 2022. His 2020 CD, Art of the Descarga, by The John Santos Sextet, is on the prestigious Smithsonian/Folkways label. Their 2023 CD release, Filosofía Caribeña Vol.3 is dedicated to Puerto Rico and their newest CD, Vieja Escuela, will be released in January on John’s Machete Records label which he founded in 1984. Bassist Saul Sierra and pianist/trumpet player Marco Díaz are dynamic instrumentalists, composers and arrangers and are integral members of John’s highly respected Sextet.  Photo by Tom Ehrlich Photos.
