Leaders and Community Members Gather to Celebrate Historic Restoration of Iconic GLIDE Memorial Church

Assemblymember Matt Haney, GLIDE Leaders, and Notable Guests Highlight Milestone Moment in GLIDE’s Restoration & Expansion Efforts

WHAT:  Assemblymember Matt Haney will attend Glide Memorial Church this Sunday, share remarks, and view construction work funded by the $1M state appropriation he championed. Another $1M for construction work came from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, thanks to the advocacy of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi. A total of $2M will benefit our larger mission to serve and support those in need.

Dr. Gina Fromer, President & CEO of the GLIDE Foundation, will thank local leaders and the community for responding to GLIDE’s urgent need and share her vision for GLIDE’s building modernization. Although the construction process has begun with urgent church building repairs, it will end with complete facilities upgrade and expansion that benefits all of GLIDE’s clients.

One of the most-anticipated repairs is the replacement of the elevator, which will be online and increasing accessibility to free meals and the church on November 30th. Extensive scaffolding to support future lighting upgrades will be up during the event.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Photo Opportunity: Guests and media are invited to capture the beauty of the newly restored stained glass rose window—a symbol of resilience and hope for the community. We will also celebrate the work painting the church interior, restoring the original wood floors, and increasing fire safety.
  • Speakers: Assemblymember Matt Haney will discuss the importance of public funding in community-driven projects, while Dr. Fromer and other leaders will outline the vision for GLIDE’s modernization project.

WHEN: Sunday, November 10th 10:30am – 1pm

  • 10:30am – 11am: Photography opportunity with newly restored historic rose glass window in the church balcony
  • 11:00am – 12:30pm: Church service (Celebration) with remarks by Assemblymember Matt Haney, Dr. Gina Fromer and other special guests
  • 12:30pm – 1pm:  Mingle, refreshments

WHERE: GLIDE Memorial Church Sanctuary & Rose Window Balcony

330 Ellis Street, San Francisco

WHY: “GLIDE is one of the most essential institutions in our city and there is no better investment than in the betterment of GLIDE… these investments being funded by the people of California will go a long way into improving access for people who frequent GLIDE’s service,” said Assemblymember Matt Haney.  Haney supports GLIDE in championing the values of unconditional love and radical inclusion in San Francisco.

BACKGROUND: Of the approximately 6,000 San Franciscans who participate in GLIDE programs each year, 82% can’t afford to rent or own homes, 67% are BIPOC, and all are low-income. GLIDE is meeting a skyrocketing demand for services, serving 650,000+ meals a year, with a 95-year-old building that was not originally designed to serve thousands. That’s why local leaders rose to the challenge of finding funds for the GLIDE Foundation Building Modernization Project. GLIDE’s building is on the National Register of Historic Places and has hosted many historic events in its sanctuary, playing a vital role in the civil rights movement.
