Target Aims for Community Wellness
This past July, GLIDE’s Family, Youth + Childcare Center was honored to receive a Target Youth Wellness Grant, one of many such grants given nationwide, as Target aims to promote and inspire access to healthy eating and active living. For the kids in GLIDE’s afterschool and summer program, the grant is bringing new opportunities for P.E., outdoor play, active field trips and enrichment activities right here in the Tenderloin.
Since its founding in 1946, Target has worked to be a force for good in the communities it serves. The company’s commitment to being an active citizen and good neighbor brings team members, customers and non-profit partners together to build stronger, healthier and safer communities.
A bit of Target history: The company was started by George Draper Dayton, who believed that “success is making ourselves useful in the world, valuable to society, helping in lifting the level of humanity.” In 1946—70 years ago—the Dayton Company (as it was first called) formalized its practice of giving 5% of profits to the community, and Target has kept that commitment alive ever since. Today the company gives back over $4 million a week to support wellness and education programs, arts and cultural institutions, and families recovering from a disaster.
In addition to critical grant funding, Target shares GLIDE’s values when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Target believes in championing a more inclusive society by creating a diverse and inclusive work environment for team members, cultivating an inclusive guest experience, and fostering equality in society.
