The Bay Area Gives Back

A Closer Look at GLIDE’s Legacy Gala partner Bob’s Steak & Chop House

The GLIDE Legacy Gala may have come and gone but who says the inspiration needs to end? Not us! The Legacy Committee wants to keep the good going and has connected with some of our partners to learn more about what ‘giving back’ means to them and why they decided to participate in the Gala. First up is Bob’s Steak & Chop House with Chef Thomas Rhodes. Check out our Q&A below but be warned: this will definitely inspire you in more ways than one, and you may just be craving a good steak after reading it.

Tell us a little bit about the history of Bob’s Steak & Chop House
Located in the beautifully restored Omni San Francisco Hotel at the corner of California and Montgomery Streets at the base of Nob Hill in the Financial District/Embarcadero area, Bob’s Steak & Chop House brings prime steaks, seafood, fine wine and impeccable service to the Bay Area, offering the best San Francisco steakhouse experience.

What made Bob’s Steak & Chop want to join in?  Are there other ways the restaurant/hotel supports GLIDE apart from participation in the Legacy Gala?
Omni Hotels & Resorts is a proud sponsor of Feeding America, and we work directly with the SF Marin Food Bank. There are a handful of Omni associates who choose to donate their free time to giving back with GLIDE. Giving back to our local community is very important to us as a restaurant and as a hotel and hospitality establishment.

What does ‘giving back’ mean to the team at Bob’s Steak & Chop?

More than 42 million Americans live with limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, including 13 million children. One in seven Americans relies on food banks to feed themselves and their families. To help combat this national problem, Omni Hotels & Resorts is partnering with Feeding America, a nationwide network of 200 food banks that provides food and services to more than 42 million people annually, to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country.

What advice do you as the Chef and the rest of the Bob’s Steak & Chop team have for other restaurants or organizations who are considering ways to give back to their local community?
Giving back boosts the morale of your associates because they are doing something good for their community. When you have happy associates, you have happy guests and patrons. The impact of volunteering is incredible amongst our team.

What inspires you to give back?
As a Bay Area resident, the local community is important to me and my family. Being able to work with Omni Hotels to create an impact on the community is a crucial part of my job that allows me to succeed. As a chef, I feel a responsibility to repurpose food and find ways to utilize every single ingredient—and by working with SF Marin Food Bank, who help distribute perfectly good produce which would have otherwise been lost in the shuffle at your local supermarket.

We hear you’re actively involved with Say Goodnight to Hunger. What does that partnership look like?
SF Marin Food Bank is the local branch that we work with directly. Omni is committed to helping the local communities in which we are located, so these donations will directly benefit food banks in the 42 communities where Omni Hotels & Resorts’ 60 properties operate.

Does the restaurant or hotel work with other local nonprofits?
Omni San Francisco Hotel has donated over $10,000 in gift certificate values to all kinds of local San Francisco programs and organizations, including the Asian Women’s Center, American Cancer Society, and Make-A-Wish Foundation, to name just a few.
