Legacy and Liberation: A Conversation with Angela Davis

  • Thursday, February 26th, 5:30pm-7:30pm
  • GLIDE Sanctuary, 330 Ellis St, San Francisco
  • This will be an evening of reflection, dialogue, and intergenerational connection with one of the most influential voices of our time! Angela Davis is an American political activist, professor, and author who was an active member in the Communist Party and the Black Panther Party. Falsely accused by those who would repress her voice, she spent time on the FBI’s most wanted list and eighteen months in jail. Today she is known for her groundbreaking work in prison abolition, gender relations, and racial justice.

WHY:   San Francisco’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. March began because Coretta Scott King asked GLIDE’s co-founders, Rev Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani,  to establish a tradition that honored the march from Selma to Montgomery and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.  Commitment to sharing Black History is a vital part of creating positive and uplifting Black Futures.  GLIDE’s work serving the people of the city is deeply grounded in civil rights history, educating people about their history and rights is a vital part of uplifting and empowering them.

About Glide Memorial Church
Glide Memorial Church is a progressive, multiracial, interfaith, LGBT-affirming San Francisco landmark: a radically inclusive church committed to helping marginalized people share their truth.  Founded in 1929 by philanthropist Lizzie Glide to be a “house of worship for all people,” the legendary activists Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani reforged the church in the 1960’s to advocate for the struggling people of the Tenderloin.  Today, GLIDE shines brightly as a beacon of progressive activism, social justice, and community outreach throughout the Bay Area, under the leadership of Minister Marvin K. White. The church is associated with the Glide Foundation, which provides integrated comprehensive services that break cycles of poverty and marginalization.
