Glide Memorial Church and the San Francisco MLK March

Living Exhibit of Glide Memorial Church’s MLK Celebrations

This photo of Janice Mirikitani, Coretta Scott King and the Rev. Cecil Williams was taken at a breakfast in 1987.

In 1986, the Rev. Cecil Williams became the Chairman for the Northern California Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Birthday Observance Committee at the request of Coretta Scott King.

Below are some photos from the first march.

A federal holiday honoring Dr. King was first proposed four days after he was assassinated, in 1968. However, it took nearly two decades of campaigning for MLK Day to be approved and recognized at the national level.

For years the leaders and members of Glide Memorial Church have served in the leadership and marched in the San Francisco MLK activities.  Below is a living exhibit of our participation through the years.  The most recent information appears first, as a formal invitation for you to get involved and join us!
