Who is singing this song? A poem by Janice Mirikitani

Who is singing this song?

I am. You are.  We are.

“Recovery is the discovery of who we are …” says Cecil Williams.

In this physical, spiritual home of Glide, women, children, youth, the poor, all those who have experienced the bankruptcy of their spirit find comfort, support, and sustenance so they might recover and regain their determination to celebrate who they really are. In this oasis built by Cecil Williams who unconditionally loved us, we thrive.

We seek one another in a community of acceptance, diversity, celebration, spirituality, redemption. Here we experience that healing comes from revealing ourselves, telling, writing, singing.

Perhaps you will glimpse into windows of hope and enter with us through the doorways of empowered new selves. Women, youth, and children who survive, and struggle to overcome the most adverse circumstances of our society, bravely offer affirmation through the power of truth in their stories and poetry.

The voices join in, too, from many communities of writers, poets, activists who have passionately offered their gifts of words and inspired me through the years.

Who is singing this song?

I am.

I have myself entered this Glide home and heard the singing. It was not until I understood my own need for recovery that I realized I must reveal my truth, create my own song, regain my murdered and secret voice.

“Love affords wonder, because it gives us the courage to go inside and see who we are really …” sings Maya Angelou.

We discover one another.

Who is singing this song?

We invite you to listen. To sing.
