GLIDE & GAP INC. TO PACK 4,000 BAGS
FOR HOLIDAY GROCERY BAG GIVEAWAY
WHAT: GLIDE’s annual Grocery Bag Giveaway, sponsored by the GAP Foundation & GAP Inc. for over 30 years, will deliver 4,000 bags of groceries to families facing food insecurity across this city. Each bag feeds a family of four, meaning 16,000 people will be fed in one day. Grocery bags contain everything needed for a special holiday meal: a whole free-range chicken or turkey, stuffing or rice, gravy, cranberry sauce, and more. 3,416 turkeys and 584 chickens will be distributed in total. At this event, dozens of volunteers from GAP Inc. will pack and deliver groceries to San Francisco neighborhoods: Bayview, Outer Mission, Richmond, Chinatown, Western Addition and more.
WHEN: Wednesday, December 11th; mobile distribution throughout SF: 7:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
WHERE: Delivery trucks will leave GLIDE, 330 Ellis St at 7:30am to distribute 4,000 bags to 22 locations throughout the day across the city. Media invited (RSVP REQUIRED) to two of the drop-off sites at 11am (location details forthcoming).
WHY: Grocery prices are at a record high, having risen 28% over the past five years. Many of GLIDE’s clients were already living at the edge and are feeling the impact of rising grocery prices more than anyone. GLIDE always finds a way to provide for the community and will continue its practical agenda of unconditional love, no matter what, and thanks to the generosity of GAP Inc. and the GAP Foundation, we are able to provide help and hope across the city.
CONTEXT: GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice advocates for increased food security year-round. In GLIDE’s last fiscal year, CSJ successfully advocated for $400 million in government funding programs across California for nutrition, housing, overdose prevention, health, gender-based violence, and family services, and $1.85 billion in government funding to continue to guarantee free breakfast and lunch to all public school students. We are committed not just to alleviating suffering, but to changing the systems that create suffering in the first place.
