Congresswoman Lateefah Simon Speaks Out at Glide Memorial Church

A fearless conversation on justice, survival, and standing up for America’s most vulnerable

WHAT: Glide Memorial Church will welcome Congresswoman Lateefah Simon to the pulpit for a fiery Sunday message lifting up the power of community to overcome times of hardship. The public is invited! As the Bay Area’s newest champion in Congress, Congresswoman Simon is a fearless advocate for people impacted by deep funding cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and other vital programs. Simon will speak from her lived experience, condemning those who legislate for the poor without ever having experienced poverty.  She will pull inspiration from previous fights and movements to discuss how we can help caregivers, medical professionals, immigrant families, and other people directly impacted by drastic federal budget cuts.

WHEN: Sunday, August 17th, 11am

WHERE: Glide Memorial Church Sanctuary, 330 Ellis Street, San Francisco

WHY:  GLIDE’s values of radical inclusion are under threat. This makes the leadership of Congresswoman Simon even more vital for the people GLIDE serves: she lifts up compassion and justice as north stars we must follow during these dark times. She has been outspoken about how misguided lawmakers are trying to “gerrymander us back to a Jim Crow America.” But how can we fight back?  As ICE raids terrorize immigrant neighborhoods, as health care is stripped from the sick, as benefits are cut from hardworking Americans, fostering a culture of spiritual resistance is more important than ever.

BACKGROUND:  GLIDE has a long history of caring for the people who fall between the cracks. With the passage of the Big Ugly, Cruel Bill into law, we’re bracing for a river of people to become a flood. The question is, how will we care for all the people the Big Ugly Bill has left behind? Glide Memorial is a historic church that has always stood with the marginalized. Together, we resist, dream, and fight for a future rooted in unconditional love and care, not cruelty.
