DAY OF SERVICE AND ACTION, KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE

GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice and Glide Memorial Church’s 2024 Day of Service

WHAT: Rev.Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “ Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?” GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice and Glide Memorial Church are coming together to highlight and answer this question.

To mark the historic Day of Service started in 1994, GLIDE will host a trash pickup, open for public participation, followed by a distribution of necessary toiletry items to the unhoused community of the Tenderloin area.

Toiletry items were donated to GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice by SFDPW.

The National Day of Service was created in 1994 through federal legislation co-authored by former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Harris Wofford and U.S. Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, both veterans of the Civil Rights Movement with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This legislation was then signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The mission and hope behind the day is that by participating in service projects across the country, citizens of America can bridge divides, heal wounds, and create lasting change that will benefit our communities for years to come.

Media is encouraged to attend at the starting point of the pick up, 330 Ellis Street, at 1pm in addition to Sunday Celebration beforehand. Sunday Celebration will take place at 9am and 11am. Each service will feature songs delivered by the Glide Ensemble that highlight the Civil Rights era and the sermon will be led by Minister Marvin K. White who will be available for commentary. Erick Arguello, the Advocacy Manager for the Center for Social Justice, will be available to give commentary in regard to the Day of Service trash pickup.

WHEN: Sunday, January 14th, 2023 from 1:00PM to 2:30PM

WHERE: 330 Ellis Street San Francisco, California, 94102
