GLIDE Grocery Bag Giveaway: Making holiday meals accessible and equitable

WHAT: The pandemic and rising inflation have shined a light on the challenges of those who belong to communities of color, those who are experiencing homelessness, and the many who are in economic distress. During this critical time, we’re building on our 60-year legacy to offer a new generation of services that help people get off the streets and/or out of poverty. 

GLIDE is extending our reach to meet the growing need citywide. We’re collaborating with neighborhood and community partners to address food insecurity that many families and individuals experience across the city.

This year we are delivering 5,500 grocery bags to designated neighborhoods throughout San Francisco. Each bag will have all the fixings for a complete holiday meal suited for four people.

This year, GLIDE is adding culturally-specific holiday items that cater to the neighborhoods in which they are being distributed.

GLIDE leadership, staff, and volunteers will pack and fill the 5,500 bags of groceries in GLIDE’s Freedom Hall on Monday, December 11th and Tuesday, December 12th. Bags will then be distributed on Wednesday, December 13th to community partner locations. Media is encouraged to be a part of each day of activity. 

The Grocery Bag giveaway event is sponsored by Gap Inc., who is a long-time supporter of GLIDE. In addition to funding support, Gap will also be providing volunteers to help with this effort. 

WHEN:

Monday, December 11th, from 8:30 AM to 2:00PM.
Tuesday, December 12th, from 8:30AM to 2:00PM
Wednesday, December 13th, load grocery bags onto trucks and deliver them to community partners.
