Volunteer News and Spotlight

Hello good people!

Last month we celebrated what makes GLIDE very special, YOU – our amazing volunteers. Whether you’re chopping fruit or veggies, making PB&J sandwiches, serving meals, walking with our ambassadors, or even make hygiene kits for our community, your time energy and compassion makes all the difference. It is because of you that we are able to serve our community without fail 7 days a week 364 days a year.

This month we celebrate National Mental Health Awareness month. It’s a time to uplift those living with mental and behavioral health challenges and work together to help reduce stigma around it.

Our values of Radical Inclusivity and Loving and Hopeful create a foundation where everyone is seen, supported, and valued. As a volunteer, you play a vital role in fostering this environment.

Every time you sign up for a Community Ambassador Walk Along shift, you are being a part of the change of how the community perceives mental health.

May Update

This month, the GLIDE’s dining room was filled with more than just a nutritious meal – it was alive with the sound of music. Our clients were honored to have students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

We had the Amaru String Quartet and a solo tubist who generously shared their gifts with our community. Their performance brought a sense of magic and celebration into our space, lifting spirits and creating moments of joy and reflection. Many clients lingered long after their meals just to soak it in!

We’re deeply grateful for the joy and connection they brought to our program.

In the spirit of one of our GLIDE Core Values – Celebration and For the People, we’d love to welcome more schools or individuals with musical talent to perform for our clients during our meals service. If you are interested or know someone who is, please reach out.

Volunteer Spotlight - It's YOU, our Volunteers

Our spotlight this month is none other than YOU but with a little twist! Volunteers are the backbone of our program. The part you play be it in the prep room, dining room, Walk in Center or with our Community Ambassadors, is an important one in the big picture of helping our community thrive!!

Meals Program: Serving about 1500 meals a day, GLIDE Meals Program started as a potluck in the 1960s. Now, thanks to you and our amazing Meals leads – James, Monique, Cristina and Curtis, we deliver not only nourishment but also compassion and unconditional love. Since then, it has grown to serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner which comes to about 1500 meals per day, 7 days a week, 364 days a year!

Your roles as servers, bussers, meal preppers, ticket takers or part of our dish washing crew are absolutely vital! You’re not just serving meals, you’re serving compassion, unconditional love, and community.

Walk-In Center: This is our one-stop shop for our clients who need basic items. You help us provide essential items – socks, toothpaste, lotion, comb, shampoo, hand warmers, and more – for those in need. These everyday items we take for granted mean everything to someone experiencing homelessness.

With your help, we distribute 350 kits every week!

Community Ambassador Walk Along: Inspired by the legacy of Rev. Cecil Williams, our ambassadors spread unconditional love, and radical inclusivity throughout the Tenderloin. Your support helps continue this powerful community-driven work.

“You are all truly the heart and soul of our programs!” – Meals Shift Leads

“We love having people that care walking our routes spreading unconditional love ” – Community Ambassadors

Volunteer Spotlight - Mizuki Nagae

Mizuki 2nd from left with some of her students at GLIDE

GLIDE welcomes volunteers from all over the Bay Area, and from around the world. We are grateful for the school groups, individuals, and corporate groups who volunteer with our programs. Among our valued volunteers, are Japanese university students, who come every Spring and Summer, thanks to the efforts of Mizuki Nagae, who works closely with universities in Japan to coordinate these enriching experiences at GLIDE.

Mizuki first volunteered at GLIDE in 2017 and was deeply moved by our work, values, and real-world experience our volunteers receive. “I believe learning should go beyond the classroom,” she shares, “and I felt GLIDE could provide my students with real-life experience where they could see issues up close and reflect on them.”

Many of her students arrive with little to no volunteer experience or knowledge of our community, but by the time they leave, they have built deep connections, gained confidence, and developed a heartfelt appreciation for the power of service.

Her students serve meals, help in our prep kitchen and interact with our clients. For Mizuki, hearing from her students about their experience and growth from volunteering brings her joy and it shows that her goal of bringing a transformative experience that goes beyond the classroom is working. One memorable moment she has is when a student told her a Meals client said ‘Thank you” in Japanese.

When Mizuki is not coordinating students or visiting her family in Japan, you can find her in the kitchen cooking up something delicious, “I like to invite friends over because I love cooking. I enjoy trying new recipes and YouTube is my best teacher!”

For her students, it’s more than a cultural experience, it’s about learning how to build relationships and develop a deep appreciation for the community’s needs.

Mizuki will continue providing this important connection to her students for as long as she can. GLIDE will continue to be the conduit to help her provide a transformative experience for them.

🌟 Thank You Mizuki for Your Dedication! 🌟

Dear Community,

Justice for George Floyd has finally arrived. The former police officer who killed him has been convicted on all counts of murder and faces up to 40 years in prison.

We know that no single verdict can undo systemic racism or redress this country’s abhorrent policing methods that result in the deaths of unarmed Black and Brown people. Even as the trial unfolded, the chronic tragedy of lives taken continued to underscore this truth. Systemic racial inequities remain unabated in our nation, so much so that this month, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared racism a serious threat to public health.

At GLIDE, our racial justice work is as grounded in systems change as it is in addressing the empathy gap — the lack of understanding that so many people have been killed, incarcerated, racially profiled, denied safety and opportunity, just for being Black. It is our empathy work — founded in the possibility of radical transformation through experiential learning – that is at the heart of our values.

For nearly 60 years, GLIDE has stood for and with the people, and we have always known that Black Lives Matter. Seeing the humanity in every person, holding space in the moment and driving a vision of justice from a place of radical inclusion, and love, for all the people. This is why GLIDE is here, every day, for everyone.

We say their names — Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Remy Fennell, Atatiana Jefferson, Andre Hill, Pamela Turner, Trayvon Marvin, Sandra Bland, and so many others — to center us in our work to end anti-Blackness.

We know there is much more that needs to be done to realize a more loving and just society. We remain committed to dismantling the systems of injustice that perpetuate racism, inequity, and marginalization. Let us continue this important work together.

In Solidarity,

Karen J. Hanrahan
President & CEO

“Black Lives Matter.” George Floyd’s life mattered. Daunte Wright’s life mattered. Breonna Taylor’s life mattered. All of the Black Lives judged, juried, and executed by the police, the state and state actors, mattered. By affirming that Black Lives matter, we see the herculean effort, death, that it takes death for black people to come into the public discourse around justice. We acknowledge that it takes death’s effort, the last resort, to break through the noise of capitalism-controlled media outlets, white supremacist ideologies, and oppressions in the form of economics, gender, and class. By declaring “Black Lives Matter,” we declare that the lives and stories of other communities under assault must come to light.

Be in beloved community with GLIDE Memorial Church. Help bring about a world that is racially and socially just.

We are responding to the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, by focusing on “direct in-person actions” and “direct virtual actions.” We are activating GLIDE Memorial Church’s spiritual, community and creative outlets in service of Black Lives.

After a successful pilot on Thursday, March 25, 2021, a neighborhood COVID-19 vaccination site will now be a part of the critical resources offered through the Tenderloin Community Resource Hub (TL Hub) that GLIDE coordinates weekly on the 300 block of Ellis Street (between Taylor and Jones Streets). The vaccination site grew out of a collaboration between GLIDE, the City of San Francisco, and leading community partners.

“GLIDE is tremendously proud of our partnership with the University of California, San Francisco’s Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative (BHHI), Life Sciences Cares-Bay Area, San Francisco Community Health Center (SFCHC), and San Francisco’s Department of Public Health (DPH),” said GLIDE President and CEO Karen Hanrahan. “Together we are reducing barriers to vaccine access and serving some of the most marginalized people in San Francisco.”

“There are significant challenges in providing access to COVID vaccinations to the housed and unhoused residents of the Tenderloin,” added Hanrahan. “Bringing a weekly neighborhood vaccination site to the Tenderloin is an absolute accomplishment.”

Expanding access to vaccines is critical. According to a  recent report from the DPH, just under six percent of Tenderloin residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine from the agency. “Ensuring equity and access to COVID-19 vaccines for Tenderloin community members is a priority for GLIDE,” said Senior Director of Programs Kenneth Kim. “A neighborhood vaccination site will bring a sense of safety and relief to the community, especially for those who want to get vaccinated. I think that is exactly what we should be doing for communities like the Tenderloin.”

The trial vaccination site operated similarly to the COVID-19 testing site GLIDE started in early July 2020. During its proof-of-concept phase, the site provided Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine to TL community members. The J&J vaccine is the third COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in adults in the U.S. and has demonstrated 100% efficacy in preventing severe illness and death. In addition to observing community members after their vaccinations, GLIDE staff and their health access partners focused on line management, registration, demographics, and check-in times, with the goal to scale up to 800-1000 vaccinations per week.

Kim is very optimistic about the new vaccination site for the TL Hub, not only because of the equitable access it provides but also because of the opportunities to engage with residents unsure about getting the vaccine.

“Just a few minutes ago, I was talking to an individual who was ambivalent about getting the shot, and we talked about their concerns. What was it they needed to know to be able to make a decision? We don’t want to coerce anyone,” Kim said. “But, in the case where someone is ambivalent, and the opportunity is right there in front of them, and they are qualified to get the vaccine currently, after they hear more, and understand the benefits about the vaccine, they’re going consider it. And so, it was great to hear that person say, ‘All right, I’m going to come back and get my shot.’”

For more information about the TL Hub, visit glide.org/hub.

Dear Community,

When earlier this week a white man coldly and cruelly murdered eight human beings in Atlanta, seven of them women and six of those women of Asian descent, we were like so many people around the world horrified and grief-stricken. But, sadly, we were not surprised.

White supremacy, racism, xenophobia, and sexism have long wielded inauthentic and oppressive privilege, and we are in the midst of a rising resurgence of its violence intentionally stoked by demagogues who benefit from it to the detriment of us all.

This rising tide of violence has manifested itself in our very own city, with vicious attacks on our elders including a grandmother and cancer-survivor standing on Market Street only a few blocks from GLIDE.

These attacks against our neighbors and families of Asian descent are, we must say again, an attack on us all.

As a social justice organization and movement founded and led for decades by an Asian American woman and an African American man, and an interracial couple, we not only recognize the deep roots of racism and misogyny in this country; we also know the possibility and power in overcoming its virulent efforts to divide us from one another and rule us by fear.

For almost 60 years now, we have faced down that fear and violence with love, with the courage to look and listen to one another. And in recognizing the humanity of the other, we have found the humanity in ourselves.

We must continue to stand up for one another, we must continue to stand together. And that means listening, seeing and following the lead of our community members of Asian background and descent in this moment when they have been intentionally targeted by people in power who know well how to play on longstanding myths and prejudices to keep us attacking one another instead of uniting in mutual interest for our own collective benefit.

Now is the time to learn more, listen more, and come together to understand where we are, and where we must get to—together—for a just and nurturing future for ourselves, our families, our neighbors and all our fellow human beings.

If you are in San Francisco, please join us in showing up for our Asian American community at a noon gathering tomorrow (Saturday) hosted by the Chinese Progressive Association.

In solidarity and love, always,

GLIDE

Dear GLIDE Community,

When historians look back on the COVID-19 pandemic, they will tell the story of women rising to challenges of historic proportions with profound resilience, power and leadership. They will also tell a story of tremendous sacrifice, loss and disappointment. The biggest insight from this tragedy will be how the pandemic clearly exposed the fragility of women’s progress and the persistence of longstanding and ubiquitous gender inequities.

As COVID-19 ravages our communities, exacerbating poverty, housing instability and food insecurity, the virus is taking an especially devastating toll on women. Many women, who were already straining to hold on to precarious and superficial advances, have had the bottom fall out from under them. And every indicator points to women of color suffering disproportionately.

Throughout this crisis, already overextended women have lost jobs, experienced food insecurity and spent increased time on unpaid childcare. Violence against women and children has escalated significantly, as many people have been forced to stay home in increasingly hostile and unsafe environments. In a matter of months, hard-fought gains women have made in pay equity, employment and financial stability were nearly wiped out. And on top of the virus’s economic toll, women of color have been significantly more likely to be infected with COVID-19 and to die from its impact.

Despite living in the wealthiest state in a wealthy country, women and children in California do not escape the same tragic inequities we are seeing around the nation. It may be surprising to know that, according to data from the California Women’s Foundation, California has the highest rates of child poverty in the country and women in San Francisco rank in the lower third of all California counties for indicators of wellness, safety and food security.

We see these realities every day at GLIDE. In a survey conducted by our Family, Youth and Childcare Center, which predominantly serves families of color headed by women, 93 percent of respondents reported income losses due to the pandemic, 47 percent didn’t have any weekly income and 71 percent of the women surveyed said GLIDE helped them avoid hunger. Through our essential support services, GLIDE helps women and their families stabilize their lives and thrive.

Research shows that investing in women drives progress for everyone. According to USAID, “A woman multiplies the impact of an investment made in her future by extending benefits to the world around her, creating a better life for her family and building a strong community.” This is why GLIDE prioritizes support of women and families of color to help break intergenerational poverty and drive systemic change. Through our new Center for Women and Families, and increased policy and advocacy efforts from our Center for Social Justice, more people will access pathways out of poverty, increase stability and gain lasting economic independence.

To realize the collective progress we all make from lifting up women, we must first seek to understand why so many women lost so much so quickly. Then, as the world starts to recover from the devastating effects of the pandemic, elected officials, policymakers and leaders across sectors must place women’s economic opportunity and stability at the forefront of the nation’s recovery efforts.

On this day, March 24, 2021, people across the country will mark Equal Pay Day, which calls for an end to longstanding gender pay gaps in our society. It is time to invest in women at all levels. It is time to bring women into leadership, bolster our social safety net, address food insecurity, close the gender pay gap, provide paid family leave, expand access to quality healthcare, and invest in affordable childcare. It is time to create lasting structural change to ensure equality, equity and opportunity for all women. There is everything to gain, for our children, for our families, for our communities, for our world.

In Solidarity,

Karen J. Hanrahan

Hello Racial Justice Warriors!

On Monday, January 17, 2022, communities all across the country will be celebrating the 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. A federal holiday that began as a commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday is now a day dedicated to encouraging and empowering Americans to participate in community service. Dr. King’s steadfast commitment to service has inspired people all around the United States and the world to work together to make positive change. As John Lewis stated, “observe this as a Day On, rather than a Day Off!”.

Many cities have unfortunately had to cancel or postpone planned activities and celebrations due to the Omicron COVID surge. I have, however, sourced events that will allow you to participate in both virtual and socially distanced local events on Monday. There are also other opportunities that extend beyond the Day of Service, which is in keeping with Glide’s ongoing commitment to social justice and civic engagement.

LET US KNOW WHAT YOU’RE UP TO: Whatever you decide to do during this time, please let us know how your family participated by uploading your service photos, King quotes or other documentation with the hashtag #GlideSF or #GlideRacialJustice.

As John Lewis stated,  “observe this as a Day On, rather than a Day Off!”.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is dear to Glide Memorial Church, a community founded on the pillars of resilience, unconditional love, social justice and celebration. We’ve compiled this MLK playlist to help usher in the spirit of our great freedom fighting father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We look forward to connecting with you as we continue to strive towards justice and collective action!

Enjoy this MLK 2022 Playlist!

Sincerely,

Paula Farmer, Racial Justice Group Facilitator
